Medical - Dental Camp
On this mission, you will help bring medical/dental care to
Tibetan refugees and the local patient population in villages
around Dharamsala, which is located in the north Indian state
of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamsala is home to exiled Tibetans
and their religious leader, His Holiness, Gyatso Tenzing,
the 14th Dalai Lama.
Team
members will depart from various international gateways
to
fly to New Delhi and use a combination of rail and road to
reach Dharamsala. After a day’s rest, our team begins
a five-day camp at a village outside Dharamsala. Daily work
schedule includes six hours of clinical work with free evenings
to visit local attractions. We expect 1100-1500 patients to
visit our camp. This camp is being organized at the request
of the Himachal Pradesh government’s Department of
Health, and is in compliance with local government’s rules and
regulations.
The local population is a mix of Tibetans, Gaddis and North
Indians. Gaddis are believed to have crossed the mighty Dhauladhar
range a few centuries ago in search of greener pastures and
settled in the lowlands south of the massive mountains. Tibetans
added color and spirituality of the Buddhist world. Their
presence is evident throughout the region with prayer flags
marking the rooftops of monasteries and homes. Other than
the natural beauty, Mcleodganj has an air of peace and tranquility
providing to the visitor relief from the rigors of busy city
life, making it an ideal meditation retreat.
Extended
Work Period: An extended work period of two weeks
has been scheduled for 4th year students. Folowing the
regularly
scheduled
camp, students will work with the local physicians and trek
through 4 villages in the Dhauladhar range and provide
care
to local villagers.
